This dates back to the 11th century - and the German Monk, Hermanus Contractus (1013-1054) is thought to be its inventor, however the idea which uses the height of the Sun to measure the time was used centuries earlier. Since then, this instrument has enjoyed immense popularity and can be found all over the world, as there is not a museum or private collection anywhere that does not display this type of cylindrical clock. For this reason, it has been known by many different names: The Travellers’ Dial, The Pillar Dial , as well as the more well known Shepherd’s Dial. Shepherd sundials tell the time by the height of the Sun. Customer Reviews:Jean P, FranceRating: ![]() This is a good solid piece of work. The only thing I would have liked better was a more elegant box. I also feel that the manual could have some more information. Great service from this shop! |
