Additional information
To find the latitude of the ship at sea, the XVI century navigators had to measure the noon altitude of the Sun during the day (or the altitude of a star of known declination when it was on the meridian at night). Almanac were then used to find the Sun's or star's declination for the date. The latitude was calculated then as: 90° - measured altitude + declination .This is a reproduction of the nautical astrolabe from the National Maritime Museum of Greenwich (based on the replica in Naval Museum of Madrid).
